"Kate's timing was impeccable. Since the 70.3 last year I was supposed to be losing weight but had just tipped the scales at 87kg- which was 12 kilos more than my racing weight last summer. My personal trainer was entirely to blame for this downturn- uprooting himself from the cosy comfort of David Lloyd and having the audacity to set up his own business which was a bit further away. He claims that it might be the fact that I eat more, work longer hours, train less and because we don't catch up so often, I chat throughout our sessions. Either way, I've gained weight, lost fitness, am commuting from Oxford to London 4 days a week and have no real goal to focus on. On a train back from an early morning meeting in Cambridge, exhausted from the 5am start and thinking about all this whilst snacking on a smallish cake and latte I received Kate's email. That's it - some inspiration and offer of support at the perfect time. We had a brief chat and I was inspired and there was that small tingle of hope. A catalyst for change. I really, REALLY don't want to go back to being the 115kg couch potato that I was a couple of years ago; or the 'depressed, grief stricken, can't get up the stairs and drinking wine every night to drown the sorrow version of me'. I want to be the slim, healthy, healthy, fit version that completes triathlons and brings home the medals. But it's just so easy to be one of them and so hard to be the other. So yesterday was Day 1. Sorted out my food, drew a graph, found my trusty Garmin, packed a gym kit and set some easy targets. The long term goal - under 70kg and a full distance IM in 2015.
For now working back up to a sprint distance and laying off the cake would be a good start.
