Top 5 of 2014 - Moment number 2 – A podium spot for our Rehab Relay team at the ETU Champs in Challenge Paguera
December 30, 2014
After picking up a stress fracture in my hip while training for IM Mallorca 70.3 and spending most of the summer on crutches I was desperate to race again before the end of the season so decided to round up a relay team for Challenge Paguera. The Challenge team helped me advertise it and we found that there are actually a lot of people out there coming back from injury that still want to race! We found a fantastic cyclist from Germany called Ralph and one of our race hosts from Paguera Ali stepped up to take on the half marathon, the furthest he had ever run (He is a Sprint distance Podium finisher) our team was complete. We didn’t really have too much expectation; we all had our individual goals and were really pleased just to be able to take part. I started off with the swim; a pretty slow swim split for me but brought us out mid table with everything to play for. Ralph was recovering from a shoulder injury after coming off his bike a few months earlier in the Alps. He gained some places and got us into an amazing 3rd position and then Ali took over putting in the fastest Relay team run split and a pretty incredible PB of 1hr 39 mins set in his first half marathon distance. This took us to an amazing 2nd position. We couldn’t believe it and it was a pretty special moment stepping onto the podium with Ali (Ralph had already left) to accept our trophy. We did it and I managed to get that final race in to finish the season off nicely.
Relay teams are definitely the way forward. Lets face it we all go through injuries that take us out of action for a while and there is always a proportion of us going through rehab and this brings that population back into the race. Its also a great route for first timers & family members who want to participate in these amazing events but aren’t ready to take on the whole race yet.
