So….I got caught out big time by a Black Friday Sale. Not the typical 50% off handbags & gladrags…that doesn’t float my boat….this was 50% off SwimRunUK in Snowdonia. It wasn’t until after the fact that I’d realized what I’d just done. I’d just signed up to swimming 8km and running 38km across 9 lakes and as many mountains in Snowdonia.
My thought process was this……
Its half price….TICK!
I’d set myself a goal to spend more of 2016 enjoying my home country of Wales, particularly Snowdonia. TICK!
I’m pretty average at Swimming & need to build up my running endurance again so figured this event would straighten that all out…..TICK!
After losing my original swimrun partner (new baby on the way) I had to advertise for a new one. It came in a facebook post along the lines of this:
“Does anyone fancy being strapped to me for a day and swimming 8km, running 38km through Snowdon?”
I’ll be honest, I didn’t think I’d have many takers but sure enough, my friends are just as crazy as me and after speaking with a few interested parties I decide that fellow triathlete and Chester Tri club member Claire was perfect. Although we’ll come back to this in just a minute.
Claire & I got our heads together one night after a squad swim to check calendars and see what dates we could make for training out on the course (which has not been published)….It was very few!!! Claire is a full time Triathlon coach, Personal trainer & Sports Masseuse for Total Tri Training as well as mother and partner so super busy. I am ….well I am just away ALL the time so it was never going to be easy. But we’ve found a few sacred dates and we’re gonna get the most out of them.
Training Day 1 – Saturday 14th May Llyn Padarn
We arrived 9.30am on a spectacularly beautiful sunny morning which made getting into the lake a lot easier. Claire had some athletes she was prepping for Slateman so while she got them comfortable I started playing with out new flotation devices very kindly supplied by @secureswim
Once Claire had finished up with her athletes we sat down to contemplate our approach for this event. It wasn’t long before we established our first difference of opinion. Are we in this to finish or to Win?
I think we’re probably best leaving that there for now but you can see how Day 1 played out on our Video diaries here
