We have just been informed at 18.30 that there had been an accidental sewage discharge into the sea of Rhos on Sea. Natural Resources Wales and the Environment Health have instructed us that swimming is not recommended until Sunday morning at the earliest.
That’s how the race changed from a triathlon to a duathlon (run-bikr-run) on Friday night. As I am not a big fan of the run, running twice was not great for me but I can only imagine what a nightmare the accident must have been for Xtra Mile Events.
Speaking to other athletes, many were disappointed but could all see there was not anything the organisers could do about it. The weather not being fantastic meant a challenging start for all involved.
This didn’t stop Xtra Mile Events thou to put on another fantastic event. After having done quite a few events across the country and abroad, Xtra Mile Events have surprised me by their perfect organisation and eye for detail.
Marshalls all over the bike course (2 different courses – one lap course!) and on top of that great signage, Smiling faces, friendly and approachable staff at reception and transition, a clearly run course with marshals and drinks stations, Commentary during the race, Motor bike support on the ride, great goodie bags, Number tattoo’s, Stunning locations and bike routes, Bike mechanic in transition and I have been very lucky to even know that the prizes they give out worth to keep pushing for!
And don’t forget the photo’s you can download for free after the event, made by what must be a very good and experienced photographer as he even managed to make me look OK doing all that effort. A nice photo after the event is one of the greatest memorabilia after an event and is perfect to share your experience with everyone interested.
All the above might seem standard but I have not completed in any event these were all present, unless there are 1000’s of competitors or when you pay a fortune to enter the race.
So on Friday the staff of Xtra Mile Events must have had a stressful day and I think they came up with a great solution which fitted the circumstances and made it worth to come down and race this event with it’s tough but beautiful bike course. And even thou numbers might have dropped a bit and the weather was challenging in the morning all staff had a smile on their face, organised all the above and put on another great event.
So Hurray Xtra Mile Events...! For saving the race but mainly putting on great races in general. I drive all the way from London to race in Wales but it is more than worth it and that is definitely not only because of the beautiful scenery.
Happy Anniversary Jennifer! 52 weeks!
